Using a Powered Hedge Trimmer

!±8± Using a Powered Hedge Trimmer

Although reasonably straightforward, using a powered hedge trimmer does require a degree of care. Remember that you are dealing with a serious piece of garden equipment which has large, motorised blades and therefore the ability to do serious damage!

There are different types of powered hedge trimmer and your choice will be determined by several factors including cost, your physical constraints, the size of your garden and the mix of plants and shrubs in there.

There are three basic types available.

* Electric
* Petrol
* Rechargeable

All have their own advantages and disadvantages.

Electric hedge trimmers are he most popular purchase. However, the main drawback is the fact that you need to be working reasonably close to your house or near to a power source. Although extension cables can be used, it is usually recommended that you do not use one longer than 100 feet and that this is suitable for outdoor use. When working with electricity, you need to ensure that the equipment is kept dry. So, at the first sign of rain, pack up and go indoors or tackle a manual job, such as digging or pruning.

Petrol hedge trimmers are the most robust available and have stronger cutting power than the other versions. However, they tend to be more difficult to use as the starter motor usually has a pull cord which needs a certain degree of "pulling" speed. In addition, they have unpleasant fumes and can be dirty to use. However, the fact that they are cordless means that they do not share the same constraints as electric versions.

Rechargeable versions are ideal for smaller, shorter jobs and not really suitable for tackling those long heavy jobs, such as cutting a long beech hedge or similar. The charge tends to only last for around 30 minutes continuous use and they take up to 12 hours to recharge.

When using any powered hedge trimmer, you should always ensure that it is kept clean and well lubricated. In addition, safety should be your main concern. Always wear safety goggles and gloves as it is surprising how dangerous the tiny twigs and branches are as they are fired off the blades!

If you are trimming shrubs or branches which are high up, use a sturdy ladder and try to have a buddy close by who can hold the base. Alternatively, if pruning hard to reach areas is not simply a one off, consider buying one of the long reach hedge trimmers which can get the job done easily and safely.
